Search the School Food Trust recipe database
During the June 2009 conference calls on the nutrient-based standards, several participants requested easier access to recipes on the website. They said it would be useful to be able to search for recipes in different categories, for example vegetarian, low fat, high calcium.
We thought this was a good idea so we have developed a search tool.
The School Food Trust recipe database. Click here to download (MS excel doc 469KB)
The spreadsheet includes recipes from:
- Secondary school pilots
- Iron rich recipes
- Million Meals recipes
You can search for recipes using the filter arrows in row 2.
The recipes have been categorised into seven different menu offers:
- Meat main courses (includes fish)
- Vegetarian main courses
- Starchy food
- Vegetable/salad
- ‘Lite bites’ (hot and cold grab and go options)
- Side dishes/accompaniments
- Dessert (hot and cold)
It is also possible to search for recipes with the following nutrient content:
| High iron | Based on 70% of the school lunch standard | ≥ 3.6mg per portion |
| High zinc | Based on 70% of the school lunch standard | ≥ 2.3mg per portion |
| High calcium | Based on 70% of the school lunch standard | ≥ 245mg per portion |
| Low sodium | Based on FSA labelling definition | ≤ 100mg per 100g |
| High fat | Based on FSA labelling definition | ≤ 3g per 100g |
| High saturated fat | Based on FSA labelling definition | ≤ 1.5g per 100g |
When you find a recipe that has the characteristics you require, you can click on the school name to download the relevant recipe document. Within that recipe document, you can either search for the recipe name or use the hyperlinks or contents page provided.
The nutrient values specified in this spreadsheet are per secondary portion (see column K for portion size). However, you can enter a different portion size (e.g. primary) in column AC and the columns to the right will show the nutrient values for that portion size.
Drinks are listed in a separate spreadsheet with nutrient values per 100 grams. You can enter a portion size in column Q and the columns to the right will show the nutrient values for that portion size.

Fruit-based desserts
Fruit-based desserts are often a popular choice with pupils of all ages. Some pupils require more persuasion to take and consume a portion of fruit. To help you easily access tried and tested fruit-based dessert recipes, we have compiled a summary spreadsheet of all the desserts that provide at least one portion of fruit per serving. The recommended portion size is 40g of fruit for primary pupils and 80g for secondary pupils. The spreadsheet features a range of desserts including fruit salads, crumbles and sponges. When you find a recipe that has the characteristics you require, you can click on the school name to download the relevant recipe document. Within that recipe document, you can either search for the recipe name or use the hyperlinks or contents page provided.
