Applemore College

School Background
Applemore College is a self-governing Foundation Specialist Technology College. It is the smallest of the secondary schools on the Waterside with approximately 600 students on roll.

The schools vision is that of being the “first choice school for students, parents and staff” and their motto (chosen by their students) is “going forward together”. This reflects the importance that they place on working together in an environment where relationships are based on mutual respect.

“Applemore College is a good school…and is now on a far firmer footing and well placed to continue to improve. It is well regarded by its students and their parents, with just cause. When describing what makes the College special, one student said, ‘it is a really good community now’.

“A real strength of the College is the high quality of teamwork and commitment, which ensures that everyone plays an integral part in moving it forward.

“There is a very strong commitment towards making every student feel valued and fully included in every aspect of school life.”

Final Report

Summary of key achievements.

The new kitchen and dining hall was launched on the 20th April. The following are the key achievements to have come out of the project:

Increased seating capacity: The proportion of students that can be seated in the dining room has been dramatically increased. In September 2008 there were four tables with four seats each in the servery area, there were also some other mobile tables set out in the hallway. Now the school has a large dining area with a seating capacity of 200.

Increased meal capacity: The key measure was the increase in meal capacity, which was recorded on Roast Wednesdays. Pre-intervention this was 30 portions + 2 other hot meal options; post-intervention this was at least 30 portions (depending on roast meat type) + 5 other hot meal options.

Another key achievement is the increase in take up that the kitchen can now accommodate. During the Free Meal Trial which was used to test the kitchens capacity, the kitchen was able to cope with producing food for 500 students or 80% of those on roll.

Reduced unit cost: In addition, the introduction of the new dishwasher enabled the kitchen to use plates/trays/cutlery meant a subsequent drop in the cost of disposables. Pre-intervention this was £14 per day, post-interventions this is now £5 per day, which is a saving of £1755.00 per academic year. The school is also now setting a good example to the students by showing that using reusable items makes more environmental sense than using disposable ones.
