Our response to the Government's review of Personal, Social, Health and Economics (PHSE) education stresses that children's learning about healthy eating in this subject - alongside practical cooking lessons and a consistent message about what it means to eat well in all parts of school life - is more important than ever.
The Government’s review has been seeking views on what children should learn in PHSE and whether there are some topics which should be statutory, because of their importance for children’s development.
What we say:
Including food elements within the PHSE programme of study provides an opportunity for teachers to make coherent links with the work of their colleagues on cooking and food skills.
It will also ensure that children and young people have the chance to build on the skills and knowledge they gain at school and to develop the confidence to make healthy food choices throughout their lives.
