Guide to the nutrient-based standards

Guide to the nutrient-based standards

A guide to introducing the Government's food-based and nutrient-based standards for school lunches

The School Food Trust has produced this guide to assist everyone involved in the provision of school food. It provides information on how to meet, implement and monitor the Government’s food-based and nutrient-based standards for school lunches. This guide includes three primary and three secondary school case studies showing the steps these schools took to meet the nutrient-based standards and the lessons learned.

The Trust is currently running further pilots in secondary schools and will be sharing the lessons from these on our website over the coming months.

Who will get a copy of the guide and when?
Printed copies of the Guide and any updates will be distributed in September to:

  • All local authorities, catering providers, School Food Ambassadors, dietitians and nutritionists working with secondary schools (the secondary school supplement and updated technical notes).
  • All secondary schools, addressed to headteachers (the full guide).
  • All primary schools (updated version of Section 5 Technical notes).

Support services
In recognition that there would be many questions about the introduction of the nutrient-based standards we organised two events in February to answer some of these questions, share best practice and understand the challenges you are facing. The outcome of these events have been shared on the Trust’s website see Technical Workshops Report and the updated FAQ section on the nutrient-based standards.
